Abstract

A process of refrigeration of prods. passing under a source of generation and distribution of carbon dioxide snow of the type in which liq. CO2 is expanded to form a mixt. of gas and solid from which the solid separates and falls on to the prods. consists of expanding the liq. CO2 in two initial streams at a predetermined angle to one another and then initiating the two streams into a main stream of CO2 vapour and snow. The main stream separates into a stream conc. in CO2 snow flowing in descending helicoidal trajectory and a stream conc. in CO2 vapour flowing in an ascending helicoidal trajectory. An appts. for carrying out the process consists of a shell with an upper outlet for CO2 vapour, a bottom outlet for CO2 snow and a means of feeding expanded CO2 into an annular space formed between the shell and the part of the outlet pipe which projects into the shell. The turbulence induced in the two streams causes further agglomeration, which is increased by turbulent flow in the main stream. The wt. yield of CO2 snow is about 43% compared with that from known equipment of about 38%, and is near the theoretical 47.5%. The appts. is simple and inexpensive.
