Abstract

1370538 Mixing liquid and gas; gas/liquid contact BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODAFABRIK AG 16 Feb 1972 [19 Feb 1971] 7123/72 Headings B1C and B1F Gas and liquid are mixed in a conduit 1 having at least one each gas and liquid nozzles which are adjacent and the axes of which are coaxial with in parallel to each other and that of the conduit (as shown, coaxial nozzles 2, 3) and an additional liquid inlet 6, the cross-sectional area of the mixing conduit being 5-500 times the total cross-section of the liquid nozzle(s) and its length 2-30 times its hydraulic diameter. Helical motion may be imparted to the liquid or mixture by tangential injection or by suitable guides. In operations the liquid is introduced through the nozzle at a speed of 5-100 m/sec., the additional liquid entering at a substantially lower speed. There may be a means to produce back-pressure such as baffle plates, a centrifugal separator, valve, or a bubble column (10, Fig. 3, not shown) in which case the apparatus serves to inject gas into the column. Alternatively the mixture may be projected against a baffle (8, Fig. 2, not shown). Examples relate to the chlorination of water and the oxidation of sodium sulphite to sodium sulpate.
