Abstract

1,045,048. Mixing in conduits; aerating liquids; contacting liquids with solids, liquids and gases. VYZKUMNY USTAV VODOHOSPHODARSKY. March 2, 1964 [March 1, 1963], No. 8694/64. Headings B1C and B1F. Gas, liquid or powder may be mixed with a liquid medium by the creation of a hydraulic jump in a closed conduit. As shown in Fig. 1 the liquid flows at super-critical speed from a conduit 1 through an adjustable nozzle 2 into a conduit 3 the discharge from which is regulated at 7, so that a hydraulic jump is formed across the full crosssection of the conduit; air admitted at 4 is entrained into the jump and may be gas, powder or liquid droplets introduced under pressure at 5. There may be helical baffles in the conduit 3 for creating a spiral flow, or a freely rotatable propeller stirrer 8. The conduit may be extended by a vertical section 9 to increase the mixing time. There may be a preliminary aerating cylinder for the liquid (see Fig. 3, not shown) and a separation chamber may be fitted to the conduit 3 (see Fig. 2, not shown). The apparatus may be used for degassing, promoting chemical reactions,the ozonization, chlorination or oxidation of water or sludge.
