Abstract

The steel tube forming the conductor duct is made from sheet or plate rolled round a former and joined longitudinally by a seam weld using a paramagnetic or diamagnetic material. Similarly the flange ends are slit and welded up with the same material. Typically the width of the non-magnetic weld is about three times the tube wall thickness. These welds assist in reducing the magnetising losses in the steel to a point where the steel tube construction becomes more economic than one employing aluminium throughout.
