Abstract

741,991. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. COMMUNICATIONS PATENTS, Ltd. Sept. 11, 1953 [June 11, 1952], No. 14676/52. Class 42 (1). [Also in Group XVII] A method of providing a thermoplastic tube with an end wall comprises forming a flange at an end of the tube, arranging outside and across this flanged open end of the tube a thermoplastic closure-piece and, by a dielectric welding operation, welding the flange to the closure piece. Apparatus for performing this method comprises, as shown, a metal ring, having an upstanding portion '1 and a flange portion 2 and a dielectric heating system. The end face of the ring portion 1 constitutes the lower electrode of the dielectric heating system, the other components being the upper electrode 4 and the high-frequency electric wave generator 3. A tube 5 is passed through the metal ring from below and the end of the tube is folded over the end face of the portion 1. A flat closure piece 7 is arranged over the flanged end of the tube and the upper electrode 4 is lowered to clamp the superposed layers of thermoplastic material between itself and the lower electrode and an appropriate high-frequency electric field is established between the two electrodes for a suitable period of time.
