Abstract

A thin metal cap is deformed over the neck using a roller. The bottle neck has a shoulder (17) a reduced diameter section (18) and an additional lower circumferential ridge (21). The roller (11) deforms the metal cap (12) into the groove (20) formed by the shoulder (17) and the ridge (21), sealing being effected by the shoulders (11a, 11b) on the roller. The support afforded by the lower rim prevents damage and distortion of the lower skirt of the capsule. The top of the neck has a threaded end into the threads of which the cap is deformed before the cap is deformed into the lower groove. The cap is typically aluminium.
