Abstract

A metal surface is decorated with a coloured pattern by (1) treating the surface to remove all traces of impurities by e.g. polishing, etching or degreasing; (2) coating the surface with a photosensitive layer which is non-conductive and chemically resistant; (3) obtg. >=1 of an original to be reproduced; (4) applying this negative onto the photosensitive layer, (5) exposing the latter to light via the negative mask; (6) developing the photosensitive layer to remove the zones that were exposed to light; (7) applying a thin metal layer on the entire surface using a galvano plastic bath, the metal being different to that being decorated; (8) removing the photosensitive layer with its overlying metal layer by dissolution in a specific bath to leave a tracing of that metal corresponding to the negative and finally (9) further treating the surface as in (1). The process may be repeated n times using n negative masks and a different metal each time to produce overlapping or crossing patterns. The process is less tedious than prior art methods of manually incrusting different metals into the surface of the metal to be decorated and also enables a more varied range of tones and more complex patterns.
