Abstract

A metal coating is deposited on the metal surface, covered with a photosensitive layer which is then exposed and developed, those areas of the metal coating exposed by the photographic development are chemically or galvanically removed and then the resulting exposed areas of the metal surface are chemically or galvanically treated to provide, for example, a desired engraving colour.

Description

SPECIFICATION Bas-relief engraving of metal surfaces The present invention relates to the bas-relief engraving of metal surfaces and provides a method of bas-relief engraving metal surfaces using a combination of photographic, chemical and galvanic techniques.
Metal surfaces are usually engraved or marked by any of a wide variety of methods such as, for example, printing, photography, silk-screening, mechanical engraving, chemical engraving, galvanic engraving and electrical engraving. These different methods of engraving can be classified into two types, namely relief engraving and bas-relief engraving. In relief engraving, which can be achieved by, for example, printing, photography, silk-screening and electric engraving, the engraving projects above the metal surface. In bas-relief engraving, which can be achieved by, for example, mechanical engraving or chemical engraving, the engraving does not project above the metal surface.
According to the present invention, there is provided a photo-chemical galvanic method of bas-relief engraving a metal surface comprising the following steps:~ (a) depositing a metal coating on the metal surface; (b) depositing a photosensitive layer on the metal coating; (c) exposing and developing the photosensitive layer to provide the pattern to be engraved; (d) chemically or galvanically removing the metal coating from those areas exposed by the developing of the exposed photosensitive layers; and (e) chemically or galvanically treating the metal surface areas exposed in step (d) without affecting the remaining metal coating.
Preferably, the exposed metal surface areas are coloured in step (e) by treatment in a suitable chemical or galvanic bath.
In a typical method of the invention, the pieces to be engraved are covered with a metal coating by ordinary chemical or galvanic procedures. After that, photosensitive material is deposited on the piece, which is then exposed in contact with a film or other transparency and developed. Next, chemical or galvanic procedure is used to eliminate the initial deposits of metal from the parts of the piece that the photograph has left without protective photographic emulsion. Lastly, the pieces are placed in a suitable galvanic or chemical bath thereby achieving the desired colouring of the bas-relief engraving made in the foregoing operational phase.
The bas-relief engraving method of the invention offers a number of advantages in comparison to conventional procedures. These advantages include the fact that the method offers the precision of photographic proce dures while allowing the pieces to be coated with higher quality metals than those used in their manufacture, with the consequent im ) provement in appearance, quality and rust resistance. Moreover, the method makes it possible to obtain a desired colour for the engraving by choosing a suitable bath to colour the base piece.

Claims (5)

1. A photo-chemical galvanic method of bas-relief engraving a metal surface compris ing the steps of: ) (a) depositing a metal coating on the metal surface; (b) depositing a photosensitive layer on the metal coating; (c) exposing and developing the photosensi tive layer to provide the pattern to be en graved; (d) chemically or galvanically removing the metal coating from those areas exposed by developing the exposed sensitive layer; and (e) chemically or galvanically treating the metal surface areas exposed in step (d) with out affecting the remaining metal coating.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the said exposed areas of metal sur face are chemically or galvanically coloured.
3. A photo-chemical galvanic method for bas-relief engraving of metals, essentially characterized by the fact that in its operation phase, a metal coating is deposited on the surface of the pieces to be engraved; in the second phase a photosensitive emulsion is deposited on said pieces, which are then exposed in contact with a film or transparency and developed; and in the third operational phase the pieces to be engraved are chemi cally or galvanically treated to eliminate the metal deposit from the points to be engraved; and finally, in the fourth and last operational phase, the chemical or galvanic colouring of 3 the relevant parts of the pieces is carried out, using baths that do not alter the initial metal deposit and that provide the desired engrav ing colour.
4. A photo-chemical galvanic method of bas-relief engraving substantially as herein be fore described.
5. An article having a bas-relief engraved metal surface whenever obtained by a method as claimed in any one of the proceding I claims.
