Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.
HENRY R. (JASSEL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS,
TO HIMSELF AND CHRISTIAN HANFELD, JR, OF SAME PLACE.
PROCESS OF PRODUCING METALLIC PANELS WITH ARTISTIC DESIGNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,286, dated April 11, 1882.
Application filed May 24, 1880. (Specimens) I T all whom it may concern:
Be'it known that I, HENRY R. GASSEL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Method of Making Metallic Panels with Artistic Designs, by l which method the finest engravings and best works of art can be reproduced in the shape of panels, of which the following is a full and exact description.
In order to produce these fine artistic decorations I use photo-engraving or photo-etching. By either of these well-known processes a work of art is first photographed and. the negative or positive exposed either over a sensitized gelatine film or direct upon a sensitized metal sheet. The gclatine film or metal sheet is then treated in the usual manner, and the result is an engraved metal sheet containing the 'lines of the work of artintended to be 2o reproduced either in relief or intaglio, and which, if desired to be multiplied, maybe electrotyped from the metal sheet. This metal sheet is then covered with a japan or other suitable enamel, and after thoroughly drying removed by grinding or other means until the raised part of the metal sheet is entirely laid bare and the enamel is even with the surface of the metal. The enameled sheetis then elec- 0' troplated, and the whole produces averystriking and beautiful effect, the enamel representing the original engraving upon a surface of gold and silver.
By this method panels may be made with L 5 the finest possible designs, representing works of art or reproductions of old and new masterpieces.
or hardening it the surplus of the enamel is I am aware that ordinary metal castings having the depressed portions filled with a soft enamel for the purpose of embellishment have been produced, and also that metallic parts of small fire-arms and similar articles have been ornamented by engraving or cutting in the lines of a design and applying in the channels so made a. colored varnish or pigment by means of a brush, as described, for instance, in the patents granted respectively to Hiram Tucker, April 27, 1869, No. 89,523,
and O. Bodenstein, December 3,1878, No.
210,446; but such articles or the processes by which they are produced I lay no claim to; but
What I do claim as new and useful and of my invention is The method herein described of producing metallic panels with artistic designs, and which consistsof thefollowing successivesteps: first obtaining the desired design on a metal sheet by means of photography and photo-engraving, then coating the engraved metal sheet with a colored varnish, japan, or other suitable enamel, theu drying the enamel by suitable meaus, then removing the surplus of the enamel when thoroughly dry by grinding or other means until the relief-surface of the metal is laid bare and substantiallymade even with the surface of the enamel, and finally electroplating the metal sheet to form the background of the design, all as described, and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY R. OASSEL.
