Abstract

Instead of the usual scavenging by crankcase compression only an additional reciprocating unit is provided to assist this and also balance the engine, comprising a weight and a membrane, the edge of the latter being secured directly to the pump housing. The weight-and-membrane unit can be driven by an eccentric on the crankshaft between a balance weight and the respective bearing. The membrane can be clamped between two weights, and the unit can alternatively be driven from eccentrics on either side of the engine centre line, via a stirrup, each of whose arms forms an eye for an eccentric. The membrane can be armoured, or incorporate straight fibres at right angles to the crankshaft axis.
