Lateral supports, e.g. for a ship engine, comprise a support beam 5 rigid with the ship's side and provided with clamping jaws 4 embracing an eccentric 3 on a shaft 3b journalled in a bracket 2 rigidly connected with the side of the engine 1. The jaws 4 are clamped together by a spring-loaded bolt 6 such that when a predetermined longitudinal force in the beam 5 is exceeded, the friction of the jaws is overcome and the eccentric 3 rotates to shorten or lengthen the support, thereby allowing for movement between the engine and the ship's side. Lubricating nipples 8 are provided on the jaws 4 and on the bracket 2, which latter may also have adjustable clamping jaws embracing the journals of shaft 3b.
