Internal combustion engine crankshaft bearing assemblies

Abstract

1,033,755. Bearings. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. May 13, 1965 [May 26, 1964], No. 20226/65. Heading F2A. An internal-combustion engine crank-shaft bearing has a crank-shaft bearing cap 42 clamped against a web 32 of a cylinder block 12 by studs 50 and nuts 70 so as to form a plain bearing for a crank-shaft journal 18. Bearing shells 36, 38 are provided in the webs 32 and cap 42 respectively. The studs 50 pass through holes 68 in a bridge 60 and bosses 64 of the bridge are urged against the cap 42. Studs 78 are passed through holes 76 in end portions 72 of the bridge 60 and are screwed into side walls 30 which are connected by the web 32. On tightening nuts 82 on the studs 78, a clearance 84 between faces 74 on end portions 72 of the bridge and faces 62 in the side walls 30 is taken up thus causing the bridge 60 to bend and an additional clamping force to be exerted by the bosses 64 on the cap 42.
