Abstract

A central heating regulator has two thermostats one responsive to the water temperature (1) in the boiler (8). A rise in temperature causes a fluid (5) in a sensing bulb (6) to expand and eventually to operate a switch (2) via a flexible diaphragm. The second thermostat responds to the ambient temperature and has a similar sensing bulb (10) connected to the first via a pipe so that a rise in the ambient also increases the fluid pressure. The result is that the aiming temperature for the heater is reduced. The ambient sensor can be heated (13) by a conventional anticipation thermostat (14). If this is at a distance then thermally massive walls (18) isolate the sensing bulb (10) from its ambient.
