Abstract

An elliptically shaped butterfly flap (14) is mounted on an offset axis of rotation (8) so that when fully open the valve lies along the centre line (P1) of the duct and when closed it lies at an acute angle to the centre line. In the closed position, there is a lerger area of valve on one side of the axis than the other, so that fluid pressure keeps the valve closed. Resetting is achieved by turning an external knob (16) to rotate the shaft and the pin (19) which then opens the valve by means of the spring (43). When the valve is open, it is kept in position by a spring loaded latch (24).
