Abstract

1478667 Gravity valves DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 24 June 1975 [2 Aug 1974] 34225/74 Heading FIB [Also in Division F2] A valve for the air intake of a marine engine has automatic closing means to prevent the progress of sea water due to inversion by capsize. Theembodiment shown has a horizontal passage 12 in a rectangular body 11 in which a circular aperture is formed with a cylindrical shroud 13 engaging the air intake 2 of an engine 1. The body is open at one end 11B with the edges of the opening 15A inclined at an acute angle to the top of the body. A flap 19 is hinged below the body by lugs 16 and a pin 18 and has a rubber pad 20 attached. The valve as shown is in its normal position, if inverted the flap, which has appreciable mass, closes the opening 11B to seal it. A dependent member (21) Fig. 4 (not shown) may be provided to engage the pad in the normal position preventing it from bouncing but swinging clear of the flap in a capsized condition.
