Abstract

A material e.g. iron ore, contg. particles (I) whose magnetic susceptibility is a given value, and also contg. second (II) and third (III) particles whose magnetic susceptibilities are each relatively > the given value, is sepd. by (a) creating a rotating magnetic field of uniform intensity, (b) introducing the material to be sepd. into the magnetic field at a first posn. so that (I) fall by gravity, (c) accelerating (II) and (III) by the magnetic field which chases (II) (whose magnetic susceptibility is closer to the given value than that of (III) outwards under the action of a centrifugal force created solely by the rotating magnetic field, to separate (II) from (III), and (d) withdrawing (III) from the magnetic field at a second posn. before the end of one complete turn of the rotating magnetic field and before they arrive at the first posn. in (b). Partic. (I) are initially sepd. from (II) and (III) by gravity, and (II) are sepd. from (III) under the action of the centrifugal force at a third posn. between the first and second posns.
