Abstract
Liquefied gas, esp. Ar or N2, is fed continuously through lances into the molten metal in hooded, induction, heated crucibles and is also used for thorough impregnation of the walls of the mould cavities before they are transferred to the casing posn; the residual O2 content of the atmos. which the molten metal contacts is 1% pref. 0.1% as in the parent patent. In applying the process to Mg (alloy) a layer of heated liquefied inert gas is maintained over the whole of the molten surface from the moment at which during melting and mfr. in a ladle the metal is covered by a continuous layer of liquefied gas, to the moment at which the metal is cast into a mould which has previously been purged by a jet of liquefied inert gas.
