Abstract
Coke impregnated with magnesium alloys containing 1-10%, pref. 1-5% Li, Ca, Si or rare earth metals is suitable for treating molten iron to ensure the formation of graphite nodules. The presence of the alloying elements modifies the surface tension of the melt giving better impregnation of the coke and aids the removal of oxygen and sulphur from the molten iron. The coke is impregnated by heating to 800-1100 degrees C in a non-oxidising atmosphere and then immersing in the molten magnesium alloy bath at about 700 degrees C. It is introduced into the molten iron in the usual immersion bell. The process gives a high Mg yield and a relatively smooth and uniform treatment.
