Abstract

Liquefied gas esp. argon or nitrogen is fed continuously through lances into the molten metal in the hooded, induction heated crucibles and is also used for thorough impregnation of the walls of the mould tool cavities before they are transferred to the pouring spout positions. Sufficient liquefied gas is injected into the moulds to ensure maintenance of the inert atmos. during the transfer and during pouring. The residual oxygen content of the atmos. with which the molten metal is in contact is 1% esp. 0.1%. The method is applied to "cluster" moulds with a number of cavities braching in layers from a central vertical channel, by using multiple orifice lance placed in the centre channel.
