Abstract

Resin is produced by (a) grafting, in aq. medium and in presence of an initiator (e.g. an org peroxide), an ionic monomer (e.g. maleic, itaconic or acrylic acid) onto an ethylenically unsatd. water-soluble deriv. of PVA (I) or copolymer thereof, which is in form of a soln. or in final use form (e.g. a membrane); and (b) acetalising the resulting graft copolymer with a mono- or dialdehyde or mixt. thereof, in presence of a water miscible solvent and a strong inorg. acid, as catalyst, to give an insoluble prod. (I) may be the allyl ether of PVA, PVA acetalised with acrolein, PVA etherified with N-methylol-acrylamide or an unsatd. ester of PVA.
