Abstract

PURPOSE: The tittle latex usable as binders in finishing paper or textiles, having a gel point in the pH range 3.5W8.5 prepared by emulsion polymerization of specific monomers consisting mainly of aliphatic conjugated diolefins.
CONSTITUTION: Emulsion polymerization of monomers consisting of (a) 20W 50wt.% of an aliphatic conjugated diolefin, e.g. 1,3-butadiene, 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene, etc., (b) 0.5W20wt.% of an ethylenically unsaturated acid monomer, e.g. methacrylic acid, monoethyl itaconate, etc., (c) 0.5W20wt.% of an ethylenically unsaturated amine, e.g., methylaminoethyl (meth)acrylate, 2-vinylpyridine, etc., (d) 10W79wt>% of a monooleficic monomer, e.g. styrene, vinyltoluene, etc. is carried out in the presence of obout 1wt.% of an emudsifier in an aqueous medium. In the first stage, a latex consisting of the components (a), (b), and (d) is prepared, and the pH is adjusted to ≥7.
