Abstract

Ethylenically unsaturated monomers are polymerized by a process which comprises adding thereto in aqueous medium a catalyst comprising (i) a water-soluble peroxide, (ii) an inorganic basic substance and (iii) an acid halide. Specified monomers are vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinyl stearate, vinyl ethers and acrylic, methacrylic and itaconic esters, and mixtures, e.g. of vinyl chloride with butyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate or monobutyl itaconate. The preferred peroxide is hydrogen peroxide. The basic substance may be an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide or carbonate. The acid halide may be sulphuryl chloride or benzene sulpho-chloride. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of dispersing agents, e.g. methyl cellulose or polyvinyl alcohol. Examples describe the copolymerization of vinyl chloride and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate in the presence of hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, hydrogen peroxide, sulphuryl chloride and (2) calcium hydroxide and a silicone oil and (3) sodium carbonate; the co-polymerization of vinyl chloride and butyl acrylate in the presence of (4) hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, hydrogen peroxide, calcium hydroxide and benzene sulpho chloride; and the polymerization of vinyl chloride in the presence of (5) hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, hydrogen peroxide, sodium carbonate and benzene sulpho-chloride. The products are said to comprise porous, non-uniform granules having good absorption power for additives.
