Abstract

A graft polymer is produced by dispersing in an aqueous medium (A) 50 to 90% by weight of a normally solid ethylene-vinyl ester copolymer and (B) 50 to 10% of an olefinically unsaturated monomer which is sparingly soluble or insoluble in water and which is capable of swelling the dispersed copolymer (A) to produce a homogeneous gel; allowing the monomer (B) to swell the dispersed copolymer (A) to produce homogeneous gel particles; and subjecting the aqueous medium containing the gel particles to polymerizing conditions to produce a graft of monomer (B) on copolymer (A). Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer is the preferred copolymer (A) and specified monomers (B) are vinyl and vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate and propionate, acrylonitrile, esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid with C1 to C6 monohydric aliphatic alcohols, chloroprene, styrene, methyl and isopropyl styrenes and other monovinyl aromatic compounds. In the examples, tablets of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer are grafted with styrene, methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate vinylacetate, vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile or vinylidene chloride in an aqueous dispersion containing methyl cellulose and azodiisobutyronitrile or acetyl cyclohexyl sulphonyl peroxide.
