Abstract

A high impact copolymer is prepared by polymerizing a monomer mixture containing styrene and/or one or more of its derivatives together with acrylonitrile and/or one or more of its derivatives and/or one or more acrylic or methacrylic esters, the monomer mixture having dissolved therein a synthetic or natural rubber, and either the whole of the polymerization being effected in the presence of water and once the conversion degree has reacted from 10 to 50% by weight a suspension system consisting of a mixture of a partially hydrolysed polymer of an ester of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid and polyvinyl alcohol is added, or the polymerization being initially effected in bulk and once the conversion degree has reacted from 10 to 50% by weight the remainder of the polymerization is effected in aqueous suspension in the presence of the said suspension system. The copolymer produced may be mixed with a polymer or copolymer, e.g. of styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, acrylonitrile or methyl-methacrylate. In Examples 1 to 5, polybutadiene is grafted with styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of di-t-butyl peroxide and t-dodecyl mercaptan, the polymerization being carried out in bulk initially and the suspending agent used in the second stage being partially hydrolysed polymethyl methacrylate and polyvinyl alcohol. The same suspension system is used in Examples 6 to 8 in which (6) and (7) polybutadiene is grafted with styrene, alpha-methyl styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of di-t-butyl peroxide and 2,6-di-t-butyl-p-cresol, either entirely in suspension or partly in bulk and (8) polybutadiene is grafted by the process of Example 1, except that the styrene used is alpha-methyl styrene. The copolymer produced in Example 1 is blended with a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer, a styrene/alpha - methyl styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer or polymethyl methacrylate; the copolymer of Example 8 is blended with an alpha-methyl styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer; the copolymer of Example 4 is blended with a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer; the copolymer of Example 7 is blended with a styrene/alpha-methyl styrene/acrylonitrile copolymer and the copolymer of Example 6 is blended with polymethyl methacrylate.
