Abstract

A graft polymer of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer on to a polyalkylene glycol trunk polymer is used as the suspending agent in the suspension polymerization of one or more vinyl compounds alone or with other copolymerizable monomers using a free radical catalyst. The polyalkylene glycol may be polyethylene glycol, ethylene glycol/propylene glycol copolymer or polyglycols whose terminal hydroxyl groups have been esterified or etherified, and the graft chains are from vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate, octoate or acrylic or methacrylic esters. The examples show the polymerization of vinyl chloride using lauroyl peroxide as a catalyst. The resulting polyvinyl chloride was porous in nature and absorbed plasticizer.
