Abstract

Vinyl and vinylidene monomers are polymerized by heating in aqueous media until a water-insoluble polymer is formed 100 parts by weight of the monomer and 0.1 to 0.6 parts by weight of the t.-butyl peroxy ester of an acid of formula RC(CH3)2COOH where R is a straight or branched chain aliphatic or alicyclic radical having 1 to 10 carbon atoms. Specified monomers are vinyl chloride, mixtures of vinyl chloride with vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate or vinyl stearate, and vinylidene chloride. Specified peroxy esters are t.-butyl peroxy pivalate and t.-butyl peroxy dimethyl neopentyl acetate, which may be used in admixture with diacyl peroxides, e.g. lauroyl peroxide. The aqueous medium may contain suspending and dispersing agents. In an example polychloride is polymerized in aqueous medium in the presence of t.-butyl peroxy pivalate, methyl cellulose and sorbitan stearate.
