Abstract

Vinylidene chloride is grafted on to a copolymer of ethylene and a vinyl ester of formula CH2=CHOCOR, wherein R is an alkyl group having not more than 6 carbon atoms or an aryl group. Preferred esters are vinyl acetate, vinyl n-butyrate, vinyl propionate and vinyl benzoate. The polymerization may be effected in the presence of an additional monomer, e.g. an ester of (meth)acrylic acid, a vinyl ether or ester, an olefin, an itaconic acid ester, vinyl chloride or 1,2-dichloroethylene. The catalyst may be a Redox system, e.g. H2O2, ascorbic acid and an Fe salt, or a free radical catalyst alone, e.g. H2O2; dibenzoyl, dilauroyl, diacetyl, di-trichloroacetyl, cyclohexanesulphonyl acetyl or dicrotonyl peroxide; a perdisulphate, perborate or peracid such as peracetic acid; or azoisobutyronitrile. In Example 1 an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer is dissolved in vinylidene chloride and ethyl acrylate is added to the solution, which is emulsified in water before polymerization is carried out using the aforementioned Redox system. The copolymer/vinylidene chloride solution is suspended in an aqueous medium in Examples 2 to 6 and polymerized using cyclohexanesulphonyl acetyl peroxide as catalyst; in Example 6 the suspension medium contains ethyl acrylate. The graft polymer from Example 1 may be stabilized with cetyl alcohol. Fibres, sheets and films may be produced from the graft polymers.
