Abstract

Graft polymers are made by polymerizing vinylidene compounds, including mixtures thereof, in the presence of saturated polyesters of molecular weight of at least 900 and having the general formula <FORM:0987353/C3/1> in which R represents hydrogen, a linear or branched chain saturated polyester radical or a mono- or di-carboxylic acid radical, R1 represents hydrogen or a C1-C5 alkyl group, R2 represents a C4-C12 aliphatic hydrocarbon chain, a cycloaliphatic radical or an aromatic radical, R3 represents hydrogen or an alkoxy radical, n is 2 or 3, and m is at least 2. Vinylidene monomers specified are vinyl esters, acrylic and methacrylic acids and esters, acrylyl chloride, acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, styrene and its derivatives, ethylene, diolefines, vinyl carbazole, and monomers containing two or more ethylenic groupings. The examples describe the grafting of: (1) vinyl acetate in bulk on to a poly(diethylene glycol adipate) weakly cross-linked by trimethylol propane, (2) materials as in (1), but with aqueous emulsion polymerization, (3) vinyl acetate in bulk on to poly(triethylene glycol adipate), (4) vinyl acetate in bulk on to poly(ethylene glycol adipate), (5) vinyl chloride in bulk on to the polyester of (1), (6) vinyl acetate in bulk on to poly(triethylene glycol azeleate), (7) vinyl acetate in bulk on to a polyester derived from adipic acid and an equimolar mixture of hexanediol and diethylene glycol, and (8) a mixture of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate in bulk on to the polyester of (1). Films cast from solutions of the copolymers containing thiophosphoric acid -O,O,O-triphenyl-4,41,411-triisocyanate or triphenylmethane triisocyanate are rendered solvent-insoluble on heating.
