Abstract
Copolymers are produced of at least one vinyl phosphonic acid of formula: <FORM:0959376/C3/1> where R1 and R2 each represent an alkyl group containing more than two carbon atoms, or a cycloalkyl, aralkyl, or aryl group and at least one monomer of formula: <FORM:0959376/C3/2> where R1 is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl or nitrile and R2 is R1 or carbonyl, carbalkoxy, acyl or carbonamide. It is preferred that the phosphonic acid component is present within the range of 5 to 70%. Specified phosphonic esters are vinyl phosphonic acid bis-(2-ethyl-hexyl ester), dioctylester, diethyl ester and dibutyl ester. Specified comonomers are styrene, methyl styrene, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, their esters, amides and nitriles, vinyl methyl ketone, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, propionate, stearate or benzoate, ethylene and propylene. The third monomer may also be present; thus the ester may be copolymerized with vinyl chloride or acetate and an acrylic acid ester, acrylonitrile, styrene, a vinyl ether, butadiene, vinylidene chloride or trichloroethylene. The polymerization may take place in aqueous media in suspension or emulsion preferably with a portion of the monomer present initially, the remainder being added during polymerization, and using emulsifiers, suspension stabilizers and catalysts such as per-compounds and particularly redox systems e.g. sodium or potassium persulphate and sodium or potassium bisulphite or consisting of hydrogen peroxide and sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate.
