Abstract

1414393 Chloroprene polymers E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 16 Feb 1973 [18 Feb 1972] 7796/73 Heading C3P Chloroprene-sulphur copolymers are produced by otherwise conventional aqueous emulsion techniques except that there is introduced into the polymerization system at a time no later than when the polymer is in the latex state at least 0À5 wt. per cent (based on monomer) of a sulphenamide of formula wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> are alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radicals (any of which may be substituted by groups which do not detrimentally affect polymerization), or one of them is hydrogen, or together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached they form a saturated ring. The compound may be added before, during or after polymerization provided the polymer is still in the latex state. In examples it is added either with a short-stop recipe, or immediately after short-stopping, or to the monomer recipe. Suitable compounds include 2-(morpholinothio)- benzothiazole, 2 - (cyclohexylaminothio)benzothiazole, 2 - (t - butylaminothio)benzothiazole and 2 - (2,6 - dimethylmorpholinothio)benzothiazole.
