Abstract

1384398 Polymerizing fluoroolefins DAIKIN KOGYO CO Ltd 30 Dec 1971 [30 Dec 1970 30 Nov 1971 (3)] 60709/71 Heading C3P A fluoroelastomer is prepared by polymerizing hexafluoropropene, vinylidene fluoride and optionally tetrafluoroethylene in aqueous suspension with a liquid halogenated hydrocarbon using an initiator soluble in organic solvents at a temperature of 1-45‹ C. and pressure of 1 to 30 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>G to give a polymer having a composition based on the sum of hexafluoropropene, vinylidene fluoride and tetrafluoroethylene, lying in the rectilinear area defined by the molar ratios of hexafluoropropene: vinylidene fluoride : tetrafluoroethylene of 8 : 92 : 0; 34 : 66 : 0; 42 : 28 : 30; 16 : 54 : 30. Suspension stabilizers, chain transfer agents, &c. may also be added to the polymerization mixture. In examples the monomers were polymerized in water containing, as liquid hydrocarbon 1,1,2 - trichloro - 1,2,2 - trifluoroethane, excess hexafluoropropene, or trichlorofluoromethane which also acted as a chain transfer agent. Initiators used include di-(3,5,6- trichloro - 2,2,3,4,4,5,6,6 - octafluorohexanoyl) peroxide, diisopropyl peroxydicarbonate, acetylcyclohexyl sulphonyl peroxide, diisobutyryl peroxide and di-(t.-butylcyclohexyl) peroxydicarbonate. Methyl cellulose and polyvinyl alcohol were used as suspension stabilizers and in some examples trichlorofluoromethane, isopentane or carbon tetrachloride was added as chain transfer agent. The fluoroelastomers obtained were cured by heating with magnesium oxide, carbon and hexamethylenediaminecarbamate. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,260,611.
