Abstract

Chlorotrifluoroethylene and at least one other ethylenically unsaturated fluorine-containing compound are copolymerized in the presence of a peroxy compound at a temperature between 40 DEG and 200 DEG C. and under superatmospheric pressure. Unsaturated compounds specified are vinyl fluoride, 1,1-difluoroethylene, trifluoroethylene, 1,1-fluorochloroethylene, 1,1-difluoro-2 - chloroethylene, 1,1 - difluoro - 2,2 - dichloro - ethylene, 1,2 - difluoro - 1,2 - dichloroethylene, bromo-trifluoroethylene, tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluorocyclobutene. The peroxy compound may be benzoyl peroxide, diethyl peroxide, tert.-butyl hydroperoxide or ammonium and potassium persulphates. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of water, which may contain sodium bisulphite and borax, or organic solvents. The copolymer with vinyl fluoride is soluble in acetone. The copolymers may be combined with or prepared in the presence of plasticisers, stabilizers, fillers, pigments, dyes and natural or synthetic resins. They may be used to form films and fibres.
