Abstract

Chlorotrifluoroethylene and a vinyl ester of an organic acid are copolymerized by heating in the presence of a per-compound. The vinyl ester may be vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate, benzoate or stearate. Per-compounds specified are benzoyl and lauroyl peroxides; hydrogen and diethyl peroxides; tert-butyl hydroperoxide; ammonium, sodium and potassium persulphates. There may be included ethylene, propylene, isobutylene, styrene, butadiene, chloroprene, fluoroprene, isoprene, vinyl and vinylidene chlorides and fluorides; acrylic and methacrylic acids, their esters, e.g. methyl acrylate and methacrylate, anhydrides, amides and nitriles; tri- and tetra-fluoro-ethylenes. Polymerization may be effected in bulk, in solution in benzene, methanol, cyclohexane, or tert-butyl alcohol, aqueous dispersion or emulsion and at elevated temperature and pressure. The copolymers may be made into films and fibres. They may be hydrolysed by adding a solution of potassium hydroxide in butanol to a solution of the copolymer in toluene and refluxing. The copolymer may be compounded with carbon black, stearic acid, zinc oxide, sulphur and tetraethylthiuramdisulphide and vulcanized by heat. The copolymers may be combined with or prepared in the presence of plasticisers, stabilizers, fillers, pigments, dyes, softeners and natural or synthetic resins.
