Abstract

Terpolymers are made which contain 30 to 50 per cent by weight of maleic anhydride, 2 to 20 per cent by weight of acrylonitrile and 30 to 68 per cent by weight of styrene. The terpolymers are made by polymerizing the monomers in bulk, in aqueous suspension or emulsion or, preferably, in solution in a solvent such as acetone, hexane, benzene or a benzene-methanol mixture in the presence of a catalyst such as benzoyl or lauroyl peroxide. After separation the terpolymer may be converted to salt form by the use of an alkali metal or ammonium hydroxide or may be hydrolysed with an inorganic acid, e.g. sulphuric acid. The terpolymers may be used as soil conditioners, adhesives, sizing agents, ion-exchangers and, particularly, as suspension stabilizers in the aqueous suspension polymerization of monomers such as vinyl chloride, vinyl bromide, vinyl formate, acetate, propionate, butyrate and stearate, styrene and acrylates, for which purpose the terpolymer is preferably in salt form and used in conjunction with a catalyst such as benzoyl, lauroyl, lauryl, dicaproyl, diacetyl, acetyl benzoyl and di-tertiary-butyl peroxides, p-tertiary-butyl perbenzoate and tertiary-butyl perlaurate. Examples (9-12) are given of the polymerization of vinyl chloride, alone or in admixture with vinyl acetate, in aqueous suspension using the above terpolymers as suspending agents, the polymerizations being carried out at various specified pH values of from 5 to 11 and optionally employing carbon tetrachloride as a chain transfer agent.
