Abstract

Interpolymers are made by polymerizating in bulk or aqueous dispersion at a temperature between 10 DEG C. and 80 DEG C. and under autogenous pressure a mixture comprising a C6-C12 alkyl acrylate and vinyl chloride in a weight proportion of 1 to 9 parts of the latter for each part of the former, and carrying out the polymerization until at least 60% of the weight of the monomeric material has been polymerized without the further addition of monomeric material, preferably until the instantaneous polymer being formed contains no more than 1% of alkyl acrylate. Alkyl acrylates specified are the n-hexyl, n-heptyl, n-octyl, isooctyl, 2-ethyl-hexyl, isononyl, n-nonyl, n-decyl and n-lauryl esters and also esters made from branched chain C10-C12 alcohols. Polymerization may be carried out in the presence of a catalyst such as benzoyl, lauroyl, diacetyl and hydrogen peroxides, azo - bis - diisobutyronitrile, persulphates and persulphate-bisulphite mixtures. In aqueous dispersion the process may be carried out either in suspension or emulsion, suitable suspending and emulsifying agents being polyvinyl alcohol, hydroxyethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, the sodium salt of a styrenemaleic anhydride copolymer, sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate, sodium lauryl sulphosuccinate, sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium tetradecyl sulphate. Also present during polymerization may be acetaldehyde or tertiary dodecyl mercaptan as a modifier. The polymerization may be carried out continuously in a tube reactor.
