Abstract

1475552 Vinyl halide polymer emulsion CIBA GEIGY AG 22 Nov 1974 [16 Jan 1974] 50712/74 Heading C3P An aqueous emulsion comprises an aqueous medium having colloidally suspended therein an emulsion copolymer of 35-96À5% by weight of the copolymer of units of vinyl halide or halides, 3-60% by weight of the copolymer of units of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer component (other than a vinyl halide) comprising at least one monomer selected from ethylene and monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid esters containing a terminal saturated hydrocarbon group containing at least 2 carbon atoms, and 0À5-15% by weight of the copolymer of units of copolymerisable monomer component imparting thermosetting characteristics to the copolymer and comprising at least 0À5% by weight of an optionallly etherified N-methylol functional addition product of formaldehyde with an allyl or methallyl carbamate having the formula in which R 1 is hydrogen or methyl, R 2 is alkyl. ene (C 2 -C 4 ), and n is 0-10. The vinyl halide may be vinyl chloride. The ethylenically unsaturated monomer preferably consists of ethylene. The copolymerizable monomer component imparting thermosetting characteristics is preferably derived from allyl carbamate and has the formula The N.methylol groups of the addition product may be etherified with a C 1-8 alcohol. Further monomers may also be present such as acrylamide, methacrylamide, allyl alcohol, 2-hydroxy ethylacrylate or methacrylate, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, crotonic acid, acrylonitrile, methyl methacrylate, styrene or vinyl acetate. In Example 1 a monomer emulsion containing vinyl chloride, acrylamide and N-methylol allyl carbamate is suspended in water together with either previously prepared seed polymer emulsion from these monomers or polyvinylchloride, sodium lauryl sulphate and the dioctyl ester of sodium sulphosuccinic acid, ferrous sulphate, maleic anhydride and sodium persulphate after which the reactor was pressurized with ethylene and heated to 50‹ C. Example 2 repeats Example 1 except that N-ethoxy methyl allyl carbamate is used.
