Abstract

The articles are cast in a metal chill mould hwose shape forms a volume of revolution about an axis. The mould is surmounted by a composite core formed from a thin outer sand core on a metallic inner core. Due to the presence of the sand core, cooling is slower on the surface which form the internal friction surface of the brake drum or disc, than on the mould side which forms the external surface. Cooling is faster than in conventional sand casting processes. Enables a higher C content iron to be cast, with consequent resistance to thermal cracking combined with a friction surface which is non-porous.
