A sliding window or rigid panel 1 slidable along guides such as channels 3 (or alternatively the channels may be in the panel or sash stiles and cooperate with a guiding rib on the window frame jambs 4) in the jambs 4 has a stabilising device to restrict rotational movement of the panel in its own plane to prevent jamming and comprises a first cord 8, wire chain or like flexible member capable of sustaining tensile load, and attached to the channel guide 3 at 7, passing through a tubular guide 6 traversing the panel 1 at the leading (or lagging) edge transversely to the direction of sliding movement of the panel 1, the other end of the cord 8 being secured as at 9 to the opposite channel guide 3 so that the cord 8 is taut, the point 9 being on the side of the tubular guide 6 opposite to the point 7 and disposed at a distance in the direction of sliding from the point 7, this distance limiting the extent of the sliding travel of the panel, the first cord 8 thus limiting or preventing rotational motion of the panel in its own plane in one direction and a similar cord 10 limiting the rotation of the panel in the opposite direction. Counter balancing springs for the weight of the panel may be provided in vertically sliding windows or panels.
