Abstract

With recovery of pure CaCO3 is effected by calcination of the ground mineral at 950 degrees C to convert most of the CaCO3 to CaO and suspending the solid residue water at 60 degrees C to the boiling point of the solution and treating it with NH4Cl or NH4NO3, preferably the latter, and filtering off the concentrated insoluble phosphate. The filtrate is treated with CO2, obtained during calcination of the CaCO3, and with NH3 to give a ppt. of pure CaCO3. Enriched phosphate fertilisers may be produced with pure CaCO3 as by-product, also useful in industry, from minerals which are so high in CaCO3 content that normal processes of producing enriched phosphate fertilisers are uneconomic. Applicable to continuous operation.
