Abstract

CaCO3 is produced by dissolving industrial Ca(NO3)2 in 20-65% aq. NH4NO3 soln. adjusting the pH to 5.8-7.2 with NH3, filtering the soln., and precipitating CaCO3 by the addition of NH3 and CO2 in a CaCO3: NH3: CO2 molar ratio of 1:2-2.2:1-1.3 respectively, at 30-70 DEG C. and separating, washing and drying the CaCO3. 0.5-0.8 parts of NH4NO3 soln. may be used per part of Ca(NO3)2 which may be obtained from the nitration of phosphate rock. The Ca(NO3)2 and NH4NO3 containing soln. may be filtered through pressure filters, e.g. candle filter, at 1-6 atm. The filtrate may be injected into the middle or lower half of a tall vessel, with a pointed bottom through which are passed the gases, e.g. NH3 and CO2 alone or with inert gases, e.g. lime kiln gas. The NH4NO3 produced may be recovered by evaporating the soln. to dryness, or it may be recycled without separation.
