Abstract

Residual products obtained during the prodn. of sodium carbonate by the Solvay process, e.g. the aqs. soln. obtained during ammonia regeneration, the aqs. soln. obtained during brine purification, and the aqs. suspension obtained during calcination of the limestone, are purified by (a) mixing the different residual prods., (b) concentrating the mixt. to a concn. of 8-12 wt. % solids, (c) opt. adding a flocculating agent, (d) separating the deposited solids in two or more operations, pref. with a centrifuge or disc filter, at 70-90 degrees C, (e) adding a liquid to the separated solids between the operations of step (d), this liquid being free of chloride ions, and (f) mixing the liquid from the final separating operation of step (d) with the mixt. from step (a). Simple cheap process using small sized equipment, and only requiring use of a flocculating agent. Gives solid prods. having a low water content. These can be used in the prodn. of fertiliser or cement.
