(Co)polymers of vinyl chloride having improved stability are obtained by emulsion polymerisation when the emulsifier consists of salts of alkali metals and 12 - 24 (12 - 18) C alpha-sulphonic fatty acids used in an amount of 0.6 - 4.0 (0.8 - 3.0) wt.%, based on the monomers, and the pH is adjusted to 6 - 11 (7 - 10). 0.02 - 2.0 (0.1 - 0.8) wt.% of alkaline reagents, such as lithium carbonate or hydroxide can be added before treatment.
