Abstract

The aqueous emulsion obtained by polymerisation of a vinyl aromatic monomer (styrene) in the presence of an unsaturated rubber latex is (1) mixed with aqueous electrolyte (I) least at 79.4 degrees C to coagulate the resin (2) held at 79.4 degrees C to agglomerate part of the coagulated resin which is separated and evaporated to remove water. I is a solution of 0.25-4 wt. % of alkali- or alkaline earth metal chloride. The emulsion is added to I heated to 85.0-104.4 degrees C. Use of heated electrolyte produces a more rapid agglomeration than when cold. The product is granular has a high specific. wt. and a low fines content.
