Abstract
The blank and the mandrel are driven and rotated in a forward stroke (a) in which the movement of the blank exceeds the stroke of the mandrel by a dimension (m) corresponding with the length of the blank entering the rolls. The reverse stroke (b) of the mandrel and the blank then occurs at a speed (Sb) very close to the peripheral speeds (Sr) of the work rolls. During stroke (b), the blank is rolled down onto the mandrel. The pref. pilger mill uses a stationary stand contg. two grooved work rolls, and is fitted with a reciprocating slide undertaking strokes (a, b) and drive units for rotating the mandrel and the blank during the forward stroke (ae and also moving the blank by an amt. (m) exceeding the forward stroke of the mandrel. Used to obtain increased rolling speeds when mfg. tubes from the blanks difficult to deform, e.g., Zr, Mo, Ti, Nb and their alloys.
