Abstract

The standy-by brake cylinder includes a compressed coil spring to provide mechanical braking power in cases where the hydraulic system fails. The spring is compressed by an air operated piston and then retained by a cross pin. The hollow piston rod locates a forked spindle with which the cross pin can be manually twisted in order to release the spring pressure. Longitudinal slots in piston rod tube and piston sleeve enable the external pressure head to outstroke once the cross pin has unlocked the two piston tubes. This produces the required thrust on the hydraulic brake cylinders.
