Abstract

1511298 Applying predetermined tensions to bolts ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO Ltd 1 Oct 1976 [3 Nov 1975] 45641/75 Heading F2H In a method of and apparatus for tensioning a hollow bolt 1 using a piston and cylinder unit 6 attached to one end of the bolt by a hollow adaptor 5, a pump unit 13 supplying pressure fluid to the cylinder 14 to cause the piston 9 to urge a push-rod 7 extending through the bolt against a reaction surface at the other end of the bolt, the adaptor 5 engages the bolt and the cylinder by respective threads of opposite hand so that the piston and cylinder unit 6 can be attached to the bolt 1 by rotation of the adaptor 5 only. Preferably the pump unit 13 includes an air-operated hydropump 15 and is mounted directly on the piston and cylinder unit 6. The piston 9 bears on the rod 7 via a load-spreading disc 11 retained in a recess in the piston by a ring 12, and a shim 20 of softer metal than the discs 11 and rod 7. A collar 8 is heat shrunk on to the end of the rod 7. The reaction surface at the other end of the bolt may be provided by a cap nut 3 with a load-spreading disc 4, or by one of two members 21, 22 secured together by the bolt and into which the bolt is screwed. To enable the apparatus to be used on bolts of different diameters, a set of adaptors 5 may be provided, each having at one end a thread suited to engage a particular size of bolt. Push rods 7 are provided to suit various bolt lengths. The shims 20, 24, dies 11, and push-rod 7 are as described in Specification 1,511,297.
