Abstract

1,260,870. Hydraulic pressure apparatus. APPLIED POWER INDUSTRIES Inc. Sept. 26, 1969 [April 23, 1969], No.47398/69. Heading F1P. A hydraulic clamping device comprises a piston 14 having a portion 16 slidable within a cylinder 10 and having an axial bore 52 receiving a cylindrical guide member 42 fixed by a pin 46 to the cylinder 10, the member 42 having a cam groove 48 engaged by a ball 54 located in a detent 56 in the piston 14 so that when pressure fluid is supplied to the cylinder 10 via an inlet 18, the piston moves axially and simultaneously rotates. The piston 14 may be returned at the end of the stroke by a spring 24, or hydraulically, and is connected to a clamping arm 34 provided with a work engaging saddle 38. The spring 24 acts under torsion as well as compression by having its ends 28, 30 fixed relative to the piston 14 and cylinder base 26 respectively. The cam groove 48 has an arcuate portion and a straight axial portion 58 so that initially the piston rotates as it moves axially to align the saddle 38 with a work-piece, and then moves purely axially to effect clamping of the work-piece.
