Abstract

1,234,729. Hydraulic and pneumatic presses. IMPERIAL MFG. & ENG. CO. 29 Sept., 1969 [13 Feb., 1969], No. 47812/69. Heading B5F. A press comprises a pair of parallel cylindrical supports 11, 12 anchored at one end in a base 10 and at the other end in a tie member 14, a piston 19 mounted on one support 11 and within a cylinder assembly 26 reciprocally mounted on the supports 11, 12, the support 11 having first and second passages 48, 56 (Fig. 3) open to first and second expansible chambers 46, 47 on opposite sides of the piston 19, and the cylinder assembly 26 and base 10 having opposed tool mounting portions 71, 72 on the side of the support 11 away from the support 12. The piston 19 is held in place by means of a retaining ring 21 and a nut 22 threaded on to a split screw 23 positioned in a recess 24 in the support 11. The passages 48, 56 are connected through passages (52, 62), Fig. 2 (not shown), to a pump (P) through a valve (V). The fluid used may be hydraulic or air. The bore 41 in the head portion 27 of the cylinder assembly 26 is slightly oval-shaped (Fig. 4, not shown) to prevent binding on the support 12. The two supports 11, 12 are press fitted into the base 10, the support 11 being provided with a set screw 13. The support 12 is locked in the tie member 14 by a set screw 16 and the support 11 is held by a clamping screw 18 passing through a bifurcated portion of the tie member 14.
