Abstract

An apparatus for intensifying a force that is applied to a tool to move said tool into and out of engagement with a workpiece comprises: a cylinder (12) divided into a first cavity and a second cavity a cylinder (14) comprising a third cavity an intensifier piston (104) in said first cavity a reservoir piston (132) in said second cavity an intensifier rod (110) attached to said intensifier piston and passing through said reservoir piston a rear piston (184) in said third cavity passage means (168) connecting the cylinder 12 and the cylinder 14 an actuating rod (46) attached to said rear piston means (86) for introducing a pressurised fluid into the cylinder 12 for moving said reservoir piston (132) so that hydraulic fluid is forced into the cylinder 14 to move said rear piston (184) and actuating rod (46), for bringing a tool into contact with a workpiece means (160) for introducing a pressurised fluid into said cylinder 12 to move said intensifier piston (104), for causing said intensifier rod (110) to act on the previously forced hydraulic fluid, (168) to intensify the force which any tool associated with the actuating rod brings to bear on a workpiece.
