Abstract

A migration imaging method uses an imaging member comprising a layer of migration material spaced apart from at least one surface, but contacting, a softenable layer, and comprises softening the softenable layer and applying a non-electrostatic migration force so that imagewise migration of said material occurs depthwise in said layer. Specifically either (a) the migration material is magnetizable, the migration force is an imagewise magnetic field and the softenable layer is uniformly softened by liquid, vapour and/or heat, or (B) the migration force is a uniform gravitational, centrifugal or magnetic force, and the softenable layer is either imagewise hardened by uv. exposure before softening the unhardened areas, or imagewise softened by heat or contamination by a voltaile component. The image may be viewed, optionally after transferring the imaged softenable layer or separating the migrated and non-migrated material (e.g. by stripping or abrasion). Alternatively, (a) if the migration material is photo-conductive the imaged member may be used as a xeroprinting plate, (b) the migration image may be used as a mask in the subsequent exposure of the softenable layer (as in divisional Specification 1,273,384 or substrate which may be photo-hardenable, photoconductive or a diazotype material, the layer or substrate then being developed, (c) the migration image is used as a magnetic image or (d) the migration image undergoes imagewise reaction with the substrate or a surface layer.
